The Our Local Food-Kaw River Valley program is a newly-formed network of local farms, farmers markets, food businesses, and consumers who are committed to increasing the production and sales of fresh, local foods here in NE Kansas.
Our goal is to provide you with a useful VOCAL LOCAL tool box. We'll be adding items to the tool box, but we want to introduce you to our version of WD-40, the miracle lubricant that gets everything moving more smoothly...
Tool: Vocal Local Comment Card
Description: a small business card that you can carry in you pocket or wallet.
Purpose: empower you, as the consumer, to ask for local foods everywhere you spend food dollars.
Uses: communicate your desire to have local food options available at a business. Can also be used to praise and say thanks to a business that is a local foods champion.
As a Vocal Local Charter Member (membership is free thanks to a Kansas Department of Ag grant!) you'll receive Vocal Local Comment Cards. What we need you to do is start using them and greasing the wheels for our local farmers.
Using them is simple. When you are having dinner at a restaurant, fill out a card and include it with your payment. If you are in a grocery store and it doesn't carry your favorite locally grown cantaloupe, suggest the producer manager contact us and we can help find a farmer who wants to sell wholesale.
We need our stores and restaurants to know there IS a demand for locally raised food and the Vocal Local Comment Card is a tangible representation of demand. So simple its almost silly!
As the program rolls out, we will also have bi-monthly enewsletters to keep everyone up to date on local food events as well as "make it happen" guides to assist folks in launching local food projects such as school lunch events, community gardens and fun stuff like Savor the Season Tasting Parties.
