Savor the Season Mini-Grants are specifically designed to support new and smaller farmers markets without established special event or promotion programs. Markets can apply for funds for Savor the Season specialty crop promotions – minimum request is $100 and the maximum request is $250. Allowable expenses include: agricultural and cooking demonstrations, product sampling, health and wellness events, and customer competitions.
The Savor the Season Mini-Grant Program is funded by the USDA Specialty Crop Program through a subaward from the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The goal of this grant is to increase the sale of non-commodity crops in Kansas. Please keep this in mind when developing promotions for the mini-grant program. You’ll want to plan activities that are fun, informative and assist your producers in selling more fruits, vegetables, plants or cut-flowers!
Mini-grant applications must be received by March 15, 2012. Applications will be reviewed by a committee. Awards will be made on a competitive basis and will take into consideration geographic distribution, a market's number of vendors and potential for outreach to customers. All applicants will be notified in writing by March 30. Markets will be required to submit receipts, event photos and program evaluations to receive reimbursements. Total mini-grant program funds are $2,000.
Savor the Season mini-grant events will be featured on ksfarmersmarkets.org and ourlocalfoodks.org as well as in media releases. Additionally, we hope to develop a final report outlining each market's activities to serve as a statewide market reference for future special event planning.
