Savor the Season Program: A retrospective

Before we tear the last page off our 2010 calandar, we wanted to take a moment and review the Savor the Seaon Program.
In case you weren't aware, the Savor the Season Program was developed with a Specialty Crop Block Grant provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. The Kansas Rural Center launched the program in 2009, and, due to some serious penny pinching, we were able to continue the program in 2010.
The goal of the Savor the Season program was to increase the diversity and boost sales of specialty crops at farmers markets. To meet this goal, we used three strategies:
- Offer farmers educational programming and resources on the production and marketing of fruits and vegetables
- Provide markets and farmers with attractive fruit and vegetable marketing tools
- Communicate with consumers on the benefits of eating a diverse list of healthy, locally-grown foods
And we've had some luck! In a recent survey, 100% of markets would love to continue participating in the program. Unfortunately, funding for a 2011 Savor the Season Program doesn't exist. We do, however, have extra 2010 Savor the season cards, vinyl banners and t-shirts. We'd love to share these with markets that weren't able to join in the fun last season. If your market is interested in obtaining any of the Savor the Season materials, please mercedes [dot] taylorpuckett [at] gmail [dot] com (shoot me an email) and let me know how many of each card you'd like and the best mailing address to send the box.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the program–sending great recipes, promoting the program at your market or in your stall,or all the market shoppers across the state that stretched and tried something new!
